True motivation is a double-sided coin.
Did you know that the things that demotivate you are not the same as things that do motivate you? Organizational psychologist, Frederick Herzberg called it “Hygiene Theory” because, like hygiene, the presence of certain things doesn’t make you healthier, but their absence can lead to deterioration. Compensation is one thing that shows up on the list of items that demotivate individuals if it is not at least on par with others in their field. When salary was appropriate, Herzberg’s research proved that it didn’t appear on the list of items that an individual considered motivating. Shortcuts are more focused on the list of things that motivate them than the list that demotivates them.
